Touchstone post punk album (the band's third and possibly finest outing) featuring blistering bass work from Mike Watt, one of the finest players on the west coast scene. A bittersweet band-origin story if you've never heard it... In 1985, D. Boon, the lead singer from the Minutemen, was killed in a van crash. Surviving band mates, Mike Watt and George Hurley were shattered with grief: D Boon had been a best friend since teenagehood. About a year later, Ed Crawford, a huge fan of the Minutemen, heard a false rumor that Watt and Hurley were auditioning guitarists to get a new project off the ground. Ed immediately packed up his car and drove 34 hours from Ohio to San Pedro to try out for a band neither Watt or Hurley had any intention of forming! As the story goes, they were completely surprised he showed up and too depressed and grief stricken to do anything for him. Obstinate, and unable to accept the fact they were giving up on music, Ed pitched a tent on their lawn, refusing to leave until they agreed to at least practice together. Ed's pitch (litterally, his tent!) remained there for quite a few days. At the very last minute, as Ed was sadly packing up and getting ready to return to Ohio, Watt had a sudden change of heart, and accepted Ed's offer. Hurley fell in step. fIREHOSE was born.
